About the role
Responsibilities
- Considers, at all times, the Environment and Health and Safety.
- Operate, maintain and troubleshoot specialist instrumentation such as density meter, spectrophotometer, GC, and any other such instrumentation, having first undertaken specific training.
- Sensory Analysis – prepare samples for Sensory Panel, maintain reference samples, reporting any anomalous results. Monitoring panellist performance and support training.
- Prepare and analyse samples from raw materials, distillations and trials, including inspection of Botanicals.
- Analysis and presentation of quality results.
- Use LIMS to record samples and their results and store all incoming samples appropriately. Ensure all documentation is dealt with in accordance with laboratory procedures and HMR&C guidelines.
- Select the most appropriate workflow for each sample type and prioritise according to the needs of the business.
- Ensure that all laboratory equipment is operated, maintained and calibrated in accordance with manufacturers’ and lab operating procedures.
- Apply 5S principles to the laboratory environment, ensuring good housekeeping and maintaining stocks of consumables.
- Environmental monitoring and reporting.
- Collaborate with other areas to investigate and resolve issues from non-conformance samples and consumer complaints.
- Identify and participate in any training, projects or initiatives to facilitate development within the site.
- Provide induction training and support to other areas and new team members on Gin products, lab procedures and other areas of interest.
- Participate in the review and continuous improvement of lab techniques and operating procedures, suggest and implement improvements and benchmark against other laboratories.
- Review and carry out COSHH and risk assessments of the laboratory area and operate within EHS guidelines.
- Participate fully in internal and external audits.
- Provide support for the onsite HACCP programme
- Any other tasks key to the smooth operation and development of the laboratory
- Support site KPIs by ensuring prompt release of spirit and driving reduction in consumer complaints
Skills and Experience
- Quality Lab/Spirits Industry Experience
- Tertiary education in science
- Relevant IT systems experience e.g. Microsoft Office, LIMS, Chemstation, SAP
- Organoleptic Analysis experience
- General Certificate in Distilling
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team or on your own initiative
- Excellent attention to detail
- Maintain responsibility and accountability through personal commitment and behaviour
- Have flexibility (including overtime if required) and maintain high levels of self-motivation to achieve high standards of performance and behavior
